Why Can't I Breathe Through My Nose?

Difficulty breathing through the nose is a very common problem and can be caused by several different conditions affecting the nasal passages and sinuses. Many patients experience chronic nasal congestion, stuffiness, mouth breathing, snoring, poor sleep, facial pressure, or the constant feeling that one or both sides of the nose are blocked. Common causes of nasal obstruction include allergies, chronic sinusitis, a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, nasal polyps, inflammation, or structural narrowing of the nasal airway. Some patients notice symptoms year-round, while others worsen during allergy season or after recurrent sinus infections.

Because several different conditions can cause nasal blockage, a proper ENT evaluation is important to identify the underlying issue rather than simply masking symptoms with temporary medications. At SCENT Houston, Dr. Madeleine S. Herman evaluates nasal obstruction using a detailed nasal examination, nasal endoscopy, allergy evaluation, and when appropriate, in-office CT imaging of the sinuses. Treatment may include allergy management, medical therapy, minimally invasive procedures, balloon sinuplasty, turbinate reduction, septoplasty, or advanced sinus surgery depending on the cause of the obstruction. Patients throughout Houston trust SCENT Houston for expert evaluation of chronic nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose with the goal of improving airflow, sleep quality, sinus health, and overall quality of life.

At SCENT Houston – Sinus Center & ENT Specialists of Houston, patients are evaluated by a board-certified ENT with advanced training in sinus and nasal airway surgery. Dr. Madeleine Herman specializes in treating complex sinus conditions, nasal obstruction, and breathing issues using both traditional and minimally invasive techniques—tailored to each patient’s anatomy and symptoms. Dr. Herman is a Houstonia Magazine Top Doctor 2020-2026, a Houston Chronicle "Best of the Best" 2026 nominee, and has multiple publications in advanced sinonasal disease treatments. You can also relax knowing that every evaluation and surgery is performed by her.
