Sinus Disease or Allergies in Houston

If you live in Houston, you’re no stranger to seasonal allergies. But when that congestion lingers or facial pressure sets in, you might wonder—do I have allergies or a sinus infection?

At SCENT Houston, a trusted ENT clinic in Houston, we help patients every day tell the difference. Here’s how you can too.

What’s the Difference Between Allergies and a Sinus Infection?

Both allergies and sinus infections affect your sinuses, causing nasal congestion, pressure, and discomfort. But they have very different causes and treatments.

What Are Allergies?

Allergies happen when your immune system overreacts to things like pollen, dust, or mold—common triggers in Houston’s humid climate.Typical allergy symptoms include:

  • Sneezing

  • Runny or stuffy nose (usually clear mucus)

  • Itchy, watery eyes

  • Itchy throat or ears

  • Symptoms lasting weeks to months, especially seasonally

What Is a Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection (sinusitis) happens when your sinuses become blocked and infected, usually by bacteria or a virus. Common sinus infection symptoms include:

  • Facial pain or pressure (especially around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead)

  • Stuffy nose with thick yellow or green mucus

  • Headache

  • Fever or fatigue

  • Symptoms lasting 7 to 10 days or more

5 Ways to Tell If You Have Allergies or a Sinus Infection

1. How Long Have You Had Symptoms?

  • Allergies: Long-term, weeks or months

  • Sinus Infection: Typically less than 2 weeks but can linger

2. Are Your Eyes Itchy or Watery?

  • Allergies: Yes

  • Sinus Infection: No

3. What Does Your Mucus Look Like?

  • Allergies: Clear and watery

  • Sinus Infection: Thick, yellow, or green

4. Do You Have Facial Pain or Pressure?

  • Allergies: Rarely

  • Sinus Infection: Often, especially when bending forward

5. Do You Have a Fever?

  • Allergies: No

  • Sinus Infection: Possible, especially with bacterial infections

Why Houston Residents Struggle with Both

Houston’s high humidity, mold levels, and long allergy seasons make it a hotspot for both chronic allergies and recurring sinus infections. Many patients we see have overlapping symptoms, making it even more confusing to tell the difference.
