Houston Allergies: How to Avoid, Manage, and Treat Your Allergy Symptoms
By: Dr. Madeleine Samuelson Herman, MD, MPH

If you live in Houston, you know that allergy season can feel like it lasts all year long. Houston’s warm, humid climate creates an environment where many common allergens—including mold, dust mites, pollen, and other environmental allergens—can thrive for much of the year.
For many Houston residents, allergies can cause more than an occasional sneeze. Nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, postnasal drip, sinus pressure, and difficulty breathing through the nose can interfere with sleep, exercise, work, and everyday life.
So, how can you survive Houston allergy season?
Avoid. Manage. Treat.
The key to controlling allergies is understanding what triggers your symptoms and developing a treatment plan that addresses both your allergy symptoms and their underlying causes.
1. Avoid: Know What Triggers Your Allergies
One of the best ways to manage allergies is to avoid the allergens that trigger your symptoms. But first, you need to know what those allergens are.
Allergy testing can identify the specific substances causing your allergic reactions. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, testing may identify sensitivities to common allergens such as:
Tree, grass, and weed pollen
Mold
Dust mites
Pet dander
Other environmental allergens
Once you know your triggers, you can take steps to reduce your exposure—especially during your peak allergy season.
For example, depending on your specific allergies, you may benefit from:
Keeping windows closed during periods of high pollen
Using high-efficiency air filtration in your home
Reducing indoor humidity to help control mold and dust mites
Showering and changing clothes after spending time outdoors
Wearing a mask when performing outdoor activities that expose you to allergens
Using saline nasal rinses to help remove allergens from the nasal passages
The first step is knowing what you're allergic to. Talk with your Houston ENT about whether allergy testing is right for you.
2. Manage: Control Your Allergy Symptoms
Once you know your allergy triggers and understand when your symptoms are likely to be worse, you can create an allergy management plan.
Several medications can help control allergy symptoms.
Nasal steroid sprays are among the most effective treatments for nasal allergy symptoms, including congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. They work by reducing inflammation inside the nose.
Second-generation oral antihistamines can also help relieve symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and runny nose while generally causing less drowsiness than older antihistamines.
Saline nasal rinses can also be helpful for washing allergens and mucus out of the nasal passages.
Your treatment plan should be tailored to your symptoms, triggers, and other medical conditions. If you find yourself relying on allergy medications throughout much of the year, it may be time to discuss a more comprehensive approach with your ENT.
3. Treat: Address the Underlying Allergy
Medications can be extremely effective at managing allergy symptoms, but they don't eliminate your underlying allergic sensitivity.
For patients whose allergies significantly affect their quality of life, allergy immunotherapy may be an option.
Allergy immunotherapy gradually exposes your immune system to specific allergens with the goal of reducing your sensitivity over time. Depending on the patient and treatment plan, immunotherapy may include:
Allergy shots (subcutaneous immunotherapy)
Allergy drops (sublingual immunotherapy)
For some patients, treating their allergies can also help reduce the inflammation that contributes to ongoing nasal and sinus symptoms.
If allergies are contributing to chronic nasal congestion, recurrent sinus infections, postnasal drip, or difficulty breathing through your nose, your ENT can evaluate whether additional sinus or nasal treatments may be appropriate.
Don't Just Survive Houston Allergy Season
If you are constantly reaching for tissues, waking up congested, or struggling to breathe through your nose, you don't have to simply accept allergies as part of living in Houston.
The right approach is often a combination of identifying your triggers, avoiding allergens, controlling inflammation, and considering long-term allergy treatment when appropriate.
