A Guide from SCENT Houston – Sinus Center & ENT Specialists of Houston

Itchy ears are a very common complaint—for both adults and children. While the issue is usually harmless, itchy ears can be incredibly annoying and sometimes signal an underlying condition that needs treatment.
At SCENT Houston, we help patients understand the most likely causes of itchy ears and what you can safely do to get relief.
👂 Why Do Ears Get Itchy?
The skin inside the ear canal is thin and sensitive, and even small irritations can lead to itching. Some causes are simple, while others require ENT care.
Here are the most common reasons:
1️⃣ Dry Skin in the Ear Canal
Just like the skin on your hands or face can dry out, the ear canal can too.Dryness often leads to:
Flaking
Itching
A sensation of “tickling”
Light cracking or irritation
Dry skin is especially common in people who use cotton swabs, which remove natural protective oils.
2️⃣ Eczema or Dermatitis
Skin conditions like:
Eczema
Psoriasis
Seborrheic dermatitis
can affect the ear canal and outer ear, causing redness, flaking, or itching.
3️⃣ Allergies
Environmental allergies can affect the ears just like the nose and throat.Common triggers include:
Pollen
Dust mites
Pet dander
Mold
Certain shampoos or beauty products
Allergies may cause itching, fullness, and fluid, even without pain.
4️⃣ Earwax Buildup
A small amount of earwax is normal and protective. But too much wax can cause:
Itching
Fullness
Mild hearing difficulty
Using cotton swabs often makes this worse by pushing wax deeper.
5️⃣ Swimmer’s Ear (Ear Canal Infection)
Otitis externa—also called swimmer’s ear—is an infection of the canal, often caused by water exposure or irritation.
Symptoms include:
Severe itching
Pain when touching the ear
Drainage
A clogged feeling
This condition requires medical treatment.
6️⃣ Hearing Aids or Earbuds
Devices that sit inside the ear can cause:
Moisture buildup
Friction
Skin irritation
Small allergic reactions to materials
Regular cleaning and proper fit help prevent issues.
🚫 What NOT to Do for Itchy Ears
To prevent worsening irritation, avoid:
❌ Cotton swabs (Q-tips)
They remove protective oils, worsen dryness, and push wax deeper.
❌ Ear candling
Dangerous and ineffective.
❌ Scratching inside the ear
This causes micro-tears and increases infection risk.
❌ Putting oils or drops in the ear without medical guidance
Especially unsafe if you have a history of ear tubes or eardrum perforation.
✅ Safe At-Home Relief for Mild Itching
✔ Keep the ears dry after showering
Tilt your head or use a clean towel—don’t insert anything.
✔ Use hypoallergenic hair and skin products
Avoid fragranced shampoos or sprays.
✔ Manage allergies
Daily medications or nasal sprays may help reduce ear symptoms.
✔ Use earwax removal drops (if advised)
Over-the-counter carbamide peroxide drops can help soften wax.
🩺 When to See an ENT Specialist
You should seek medical evaluation if:
Itching lasts more than 1–2 weeks
You notice drainage
The ear is painful
Hearing decreases
The itching is severe or frequent
You have eczema or psoriasis that affects your ears
You think wax is impacted
These signs may indicate infection, inflammation, or a condition requiring prescription treatment.
