If you’ve ever noticed a bad taste in your mouth, persistent bad breath, or small white lumps in the back of your throat, you might be dealing with tonsil stones. At SCENT Houston – Sinus Center & ENT Specialists of Houston, we frequently help patients identify and treat this common, often frustrating condition.
Here’s what you need to know about what causes tonsil stones, how to treat them, and when to see an ENT.
What Are Tonsil Stones?
Tonsil stones, also called tonsilloliths, are small, hard formations made of debris, bacteria, and mucus that get trapped in the crevices (called crypts) of your tonsils. Over time, this material hardens, forming small white or yellowish stones.
They can range in size from tiny grains to larger, more uncomfortable formations.
Common Causes of Tonsil Stones
Tonsil stones are caused by a buildup of substances that collect in the tonsils, including:
1. Trapped Food Particles
Food debris can get lodged in tonsil crypts, especially in people with deep or uneven tonsil surfaces.
2. Dead Cells and Mucus
Your body naturally sheds cells and produces mucus. In some people, this material gets caught in the tonsils and forms stones.
3. Chronic Tonsillitis or Inflammation
Inflamed or enlarged tonsils can create more crevices where stones can develop.
4. Poor Oral Hygiene
Inadequate brushing and flossing can increase bacteria and debris buildup in the throat and tonsils.
5. Postnasal Drip or Sinus Congestion
Excess mucus from allergies or sinus conditions can contribute to tonsil stone formation.
Symptoms of Tonsil Stones
Some tonsil stones cause no symptoms at all. Others can lead to:
Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
Sore throat or irritation
A feeling of something stuck in your throat
Difficulty swallowing
Visible white or yellow spots on the tonsils
Ear pain (referred pain from the throat)
How to Treat Tonsil Stones
Depending on the severity, there are both home remedies and medical treatments available.
✅ At-Home Remedies
Gargle with salt water or mouthwash to loosen small stones and reduce bacteria
Use a water flosser or oral irrigator on a gentle setting
Gently press with a cotton swab to dislodge visible stones (only if safe and visible)
Practice good oral hygiene, including brushing your tongue and flossing daily
⚠️ Avoid using hard tools or sharp objects—this can damage the tonsils or cause bleeding.
